What we do

Data Protection, Ethics and regulation of the Web of Data

The UAB-IDT has participated in several FP7 and H2020 projects playing the role of Ethical and Legal partner. Our research team is able to take care of: (i) setting the normative requirements for the project approach; (ii) building the regulative model for the upcoming platform and workflow of data; (iii) carrying out the knowledge acquisition process; (iv) fleshing out the governance and ethical principles for the whole system; (v) taking care of the ongoing Data Protection enhancement in the European legislation; and (vi) linking the project with the work of the Ethical Committee all along the development of the project

Empowerment of citizens’ rights through technology

The UAB-IDT is devoted to the research of potentialities that new technologies offer to improve the empowerment of EU citizens regarding their rights. We design and implement tools that contributes to a more effective implementation of rights and to the improvement of European citizens access to justice, contributing to a more effective implementation of the EU rights

Semantic Web and Legal Ontologies

The Semantic Web is an extension of the World Wide Web, providing computers with machine-interpretable metadata. Specifically, the UAB-IDT have focused on Legal Ontologies as an approach for the modelling of legal knowledge and the retrieving of legal information. Legal Ontologies have proved crucial for representing, processing and retrieving of legal information. Therefore, we have been exploring state-of-art methodologies; theoretical and practical approaches to Legal Ontologies; and providing interoperability among different European countries over the last 10 years

Alternative Dispute Resolution and Online Dispute Resolution

Mediation not only aims at reaching an agreement with executive effects, but it also aims at managing the conflict in a reasonable way in which (i) the parts do not convert their dispute into a lawsuit that gets into the ordinary jurisdiction; and (ii) the conflict does not escalate to more aggressive situations. Therefore, mediation sometimes stabilizes the conflict more than solves it. Then the parts can identify and better understand the differences that separate themselves, so they may decide not to go on with their dispute.

About us

The UAB Institute of Law and Technology (IDT), housed at the Faculty of Law, is a research centre promoting cutting-edge research on Law and Technology from an interdisciplinary perspective (http://idt.uab.cat). The IDT was created in 2005 and emerged out of the former UAB Socio-legal Studies Group (GRES). At present, the areas of research include Data Protection, Ethics and regulations for the Web of Data; empowerment of citizens’ rights through technology; legal ontologies; the Semantic Web; alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and online dispute resolution (ODR); and Law and Artificial Intelligence.

The IDT-UAB team is able to take care of: (i) setting the normative requirements for the project approach; (ii) building the regulative model for the upcoming platform and workflow of data; (iii) carrying out the knowledge acquisition process; (iv) fleshing out the governance and ethical principles for the whole system; (v) taking care of the ongoing Data Protection enhancement in the European legislation; (vi) linking the project with the work of the Ethical Committee all along the development of the project; and (vii) semantics in order to provide interoperability among different European countries.

IDT-UAB researchers are also able to contribute significantly to the organization of specialized Workshops, and the dissemination of the project findings and results through scientific publications and presentations in the main Data Protection and Law & Technology Conferences and Workshops (EDPD, EDPP, IVR, Jurix, ICAIL, AICOL).
